The Great Lakes Relay is an annual event sponsored by the Lakeshore Striders Running Club, that started in 1992. The race benefits Michigan Special Olympics. The course is approximately 270 miles and the teams compete in two divisions: Open and Mixed. Mixed Teams are those who have a female to male ratio of 4:6, 5:5 or 6:4. Check out the Teams page for information about age groups and the handicapping system for the race. The winning teams are those teams with the fastest handicapped time based on age and sex. Each team member is required to run at least 24 miles over the three days. Each runner receives a T-shirt and a ceramic mug handcrafted by Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm in Fennville, MI, at the Banquet/Awards ceremony. Other great free goodies are available at the end of day three.
Great Lakes Relay Leg Sales have provided donations totaling $43,103 to the MSO.
This event is occurring on USDA-Forest Service land under a Special Use Permit in the Huron-Manistee National Forests.
